Domains have different extensions called TLDs(Top Level Domains) such as .com, .net, or .org as well as international and specialized TLDs. You must purchase a domain (called register a domain name) from a "registrar" or an "authorized agent" like HelpingHost.com and once registered the domain is exclusively yours to use. As the domain owner, you are responsible for paying annual registration fees to keep the domain "current" and retain your rights to the name. The www does NOT belong to your domain name! You should also make sure that you are not violation trademarks of other companies with your domain name registration.

A Domain name by itself is NOT a website , but it is the first step. HelpingHost.com offers a domain registration (or one year extension of your existing domain) for $12.95 per year (click here for more pricing details). Register your domain name now!

A domain name is the unique name of a computer on the Internet that distinguishes it from the other systems on the network.

Every website, email account, etc, is "lives" on at least one computer that is connected to the Internet. Each Server (that hosts at least one but often multiple domain names) has a unique IP address which is a set of numbers, such as "216.156.124.30". To access an internet service (such as the web site, e-mail, Database), , you can specify its IP address in an appropriate program, such as an E-Mail program; however because it is difficult to remember numbers, some smart people decided an IP address can be associated with a fully qualified host name (a domain name), such as "www.HelpingHost.com". Additionally, if you ever would move from one Hosting Company to another, your IP address would change but your domain name you can take with you (At least with a good Domain Registar like HelpingHost.com)

Translating numeric addresses to alphabetical ones, domain names allow Internet users to localize and visit websites. Additionally since more than one IP address can be assigned to a domain name, and more than one domain name assigned to an IP address, one server can have multiple roles, and one role can be spread among multiple servers.
