We are constantly on the lookout for software that we can offer our customers to make their life easier. Examples are the recent addition of the Softaculous script installer which allows our customers to easily install any of the 200+ scripts into their websites with a couple of clicks.
Other examples are SiteStudio and Sitebuilder which both allow our customers to build and publish their website within our control panel very easily.
When purchasing such Software, we have to trust the Vendor of the software to provide us properly licensed and working software.
Recently we experienced a case where the licensing was an issue.
The software we were using somehow included images which belonged to the GettyImages Stock library and was NOT licensed to be used.
We found out because the vendor all of the sudden sent us and customers using the software notices on how to remove the image.
Of course we as well as our customers complied with the request immediately.
GettyImages however was not ending out notices to our customers asking them to pay licensing fees for the use of its images.
A big problem and some upset customers as you can imagine esp. when GettyImages was sending out “Last Chance” notices to our customers.
At this point GettyImages is still negotiating with the Vendor that provided us the Software.
However, it does show that Copyright Laws in the United States (this particular one form 1976!!!) seem outdated and have to be re-looked at to prevent truly innocent from being prosecuted.
