SSL Certificates

to Secure your Website

What is an SSL certificate and how does it work?SSL certificate

First, let us start with the explanation of what SSL is.

SSL stands for Secure Socket Layer. Imagine it like a secret, private tunnel between a website visitor and the website itself.

Anything the visitor sends to the website (for example, usernames, passwords, or credit card information) is first scrambled and then sent to the site.

This scrambling makes it almost impossible for a hacker to intercept that information.

So, now that you know what SSL is, we can move on to explain the SSL certificates.

As stated above, the data between the visitor and the website is scrambled. However, the site now needs to unscramble the data.

(it needs to know what you just sent over, your credit card number, for example, right?)

That is where the SSL certificates comes in. The website has a secret (private) SSL key that nobody else can read. Imagine it like a unique puzzle piece. The public SSL certificate is like a matching puzzle piece for that key. So, when you scramble the information with the SSL certificate, only the private key on the server can un-scramble the info.

So, in short, the SSL certificate is used to hide any information sent to the website, and the private key on the website is the only way to “unhide” the data.

The EV SSL certificate (EV stands for extended validation) will enable a green address bar in Internet Explorer or your company name in green in the address bar in Chrome.

The Wildcard SSL certificate protects ANYTHING under your domain name. Normally an SSL certificate only protects www.example.com and example.com. The wildcard SSL certificate protects any hostname, so for example store.example.com or my.example.com and of course also www.example.com.

Frequently Asked Questions:

What is an SSL Certificate?

An SSL Certificate is a digital certificate issued for a domain by a central authority called the Certificate Authority. To be issued an SSL Certificate, you must purchase an SSL Certificate and then go through a verification process conducted by the Certificate Authority.

Why should I buy an SSL Certificate?

An SSL Certificate does 2 things:

  1. Encrypt the information sent from your user’s browser to your website
  2. Authenticate your website’s identity.

By doing these 2 things, an SSL Certificate protects your customers and in turn increases their trust in your online business. This is especially important if your website requires users to login using passwords or enter sensitive information such as credit card details.

What does the SSL Certificate Warranty mean?

If the SSL provider fails to properly validate the information contained in a digital certificate, and that failure causes the end-user to lose money in connection with a fraudulent online credit card transaction, then the end-user may have a claim to recovery under the SSL certificate warranty.

What is a Site Seal or Trust Logo?

A Trust Logo or Site Seal is a small image you add to your website to show your customers that your site is secure or verified by a 3rd party.

I will offer your website visitors a way to verify that you are a real company and their information is safe with you.
