The public SSL certificate is like a matching puzzle piece for that key. So, when you scramble the information with the SSL certificate, only the private key on the server can un-scramble the info.
So, in short, the SSL certificate is used to hide any information sent to the website, and the private key on the website is the only way to “unhide” the data.
