Did you know that a slow website will reduce your ranking in Google?
Did you know that a website that was hacked or is spreading malware will be blacklisted by all major search engines?
Yes, Website Security and Performance are very important for the success of your website.

Search engines are just companies. Be it Google, Bing or Yahoo.
They want their customers to come back and use them over and over again. That’s how they make money. If your website is slow or infects the visitors computer, it is bad for business.
For that reason, your website will be down ranked if it is slow and even black listed if it is infected.

Here at HelpingHost.com we have almost twenty years of experience in the field of hosting websites. We have many measures in place to prevent your website from being hacked.
However, we have to strike a balance between security and you, the customer, being able to work on your site.

Here I will talk about steps to increase your website security and performance.
Starting with things YOU can do for free, all the way to products which will help secure and speedup your website.

What YOU can(SHOULD) do to improve Website Security for free:

The most important thing YOU can do is to keep your Apps, themes and plugins up2date.
It does not cost you anything but a bit of time at least once a month, better once a week.
(Do you have lots of websites to manage and would like to have us take care of this?
No problem, its called managed WordPress and starts at 50 cents per month per website)

Next, if you are using WordPress, look for a quality security plugin. For example Loginizer which you can install via our one click installer or later on by using WordPress plugins.
If you are using Joomla, you could use Admin Tools made by Akeeba.

Website security and performance

Last, and often overlooked, please choose a GOOD password! Do NOT re-use the same password in multiple places. You will not believe how often we find websites or accounts protected with passwords that are just to simple.
Remember to update your FTP password, your Hosting account password AND your Application password. (The user you use to login to your WordPress, Joomla, Magento and so on)

Paid solutions to increase website security and performance:

  • cWatch – A service that acts like a firewall in front of your website, filters bad traffic and scans your website constantly for infections and hacks. In addition it also looks for changes to your website files to see if you were hacked or infected.
If issues are found a dedicated security team will repair the website as well as patch it if any vulnerabilities (Weaknesses) are found.
  • CloudFlare – Its main purpose is to enhance the websites performance, but it also includes some firewall functionality to block bad actors from hacking your site.
  • SiteLock – is mostly focused on Website Security. This product basically tracks changes to your website files. If something changes they check if the changes are caused by a virus or hack or are legitimate. It also checks your website reputation on a daily base. Only the most expensive edition of this software includes a web firewall and CDN to enhance the performance of your website.

Summary:

First, the most important thing you can do to keep your website safe and perform at its best is to keep it up2date at all times. It does not cost anything and will ensure that our intrusion detection can do its job.

Second, if available, add a security plugin to your application.

Third, choose a good password and make sure to use UNIQUE passwords.

Last, if you are making some money with your website, it might be worth it to pay a little bit extra to get an extra layer of protection.

What is staging? Staging is a method to make changes to your website and check if it is working BEFORE  you switch those changes live. That way you will not have any downtime if your changes break something on your website.

Create staging copy of your live website to test upgrades, install plugins, themes, add new pages or any other changes to make sure you are satisfied with the changes before pushing it to the live installation. Refer to the Staging Guide and Push To Live guide.

Backup to Dropbox

Now backup your installations to your Dropbox account with just one click. You can restore such backups from the Softaculous enduser panel itself. Refer to the guide here.

[subtitle heading=”1″ subtitle_content=”How to get your WordPress website ready for https.”]

Starting in July 2018, your site will be marked as “insecure” by Googles Chrome browser.
We have added free SSL certificates for all our customers so that you are ready to go right now.

However, often you will need to make some changes to your website to ensure that it uses https:// instead of http://

Here we are showing you how to re-configure your WordPress to use https:

First, login to your WordPress admin and change the WordPress Address and Site Address to https://…

WordPress General settings for https
After logging into your WordPress, go to Settings -> General. Now change the Site Address and WordPress Address to https://

Now, if you made the mistake to use absolute links or images in your WordPress in the past, you now need to change those from http:// to https://.

You could simply go through each and every post and page of your WordPress and manually make that change.
If you however have hundreds of pages and post like us, we suggest to use a Search and Replace plugin instead.

The first step for this is to MAKE A BACKUP:
Login to your Control panel and access Softaculous.

Make A WordPress backup Step 1 Hsphere
If you are in our OLD System.
Make A WordPress backup Step 1 cPanel
If you are in our NEW system.

Now, get a list of your WordPress installations (1) and Click on the Backup icon next to the WordPress install you are working on (2):

WordPress https make a backup step 2

Follow the steps until the backup is complete.
Now go back to your WordPress Admin.

Choose Plugins -> Add New

Click on Plugins -> Add New

WordPress HTTPS Add new plugin step 2

Now type Search and Replace in the keyword fields. Choose the plugin from “Inpsyde GmbH”.

WordPress HTTPS use search and replace

Install and Activate the plugin as usual.

Now click Tools -> Search & Replace

Now, if you want to be really safe, click Create SQL File and then Download SQL file.
This will give you a backup of the database just in case something goes wrong and can be restored very easily using the SQL Import tab.:

WordPress HTTPS use search and replace db backup

replace http with https

Now you click on the Search & Replace tab.

Enter http:// in the Search for field.

Enter https:// into the Replace with: field.

Check the box “Select all tables”

and Dry Run. (This is to test what will happen before anything actually happens.

Click Do Search & Replace.

The results of the search and replace dry run

Here is an example of the result:

Clicking on view details will show you what actually will be changed.

The last step is to UNCHECK “Dry RUN” and choose “Save changes to Database”.WordPress HTTPS use search and replace step 3

If you are using Drupal on your website please read on…

The Drupal CMS team has fixed a highly critical security flaw that allows hackers to take over  site just by accessing a URL. We highly recommend that Drupal site owners immediately update your sites to Drupal 7.58 or Drupal 8.5.1, depending on the version you’re running. If you are unsure how to do so, please contact our Support team.

The Drupal team pre-announced the recent patches last week when it said “exploits might be developed within hours or days” after the disclosure.

This new Drupal Vulnerability allows an attacker to run any code he desires against the Drupal CMS’ core component, effectively taking over the site. The attacker doesn’t need to be registered or authenticated on the targeted site, and all the attacker needs to do is access the URL.

A nickname for this Drupal Vulnerability is “Drupalgeddon2”.

Drupal 6 is also affected. However, since Drupal was declared end of life (EOL) in 2016, NO patches will be issued by the Drupal Team.
